The Civic Museum at the former Hotel Aquila Rossa in Merano (Meran) is one of the oldest museums in the region, and contains a vast collection of precious Gothic sculptures and Baroque paintings, a collection of fossils and minerals from the Merano archaeological area, and exhibits pertaining to local customs and art as well as a collection of traditional costumes. The Merano Civic Museum houses an extraordinary rare piece - the death mask of Napoleon I. This alone makes the museum well worth a visit.
