As the dynastic manor of the Counts of Tyrol, the castle is evidently named after the region. Extensive research and structural analysis has confirmed the uniqueness of this castle and it is a testimony to the history of architecture and medieval sculpture. As with any castle, the stones represent the historical story of Tyrol itself. The castle houses a museum, which is focused on the history of the Tyrol region, from its origins until today. There is a special exhibition on the excavation of the church in the barbican area located in the south of the fortress. The museum also leads visitors to the southern palace, through its famous Romanesque doorways, past the chapel frescoes, and through to Margarethe Maultasch’s master bedroom, where the history of the twentieth century is represented in 20 stages.
